Srinagar, Jan 18 A minor fire incident was reported on Sunday at Rajbagh in Srinagar after an electrical appliance overheated inside a girls’ hostel, officials said.

According to Fire and Emergency Services, the State Fire Control Room at Batamaloo received an emergency call, following which a fire tender from Fire Station Gowkadal was immediately rushed to the spot.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire had broken out in a room on the second floor of a four-storeyed building housing a girls’ hostel operating under the name Royal Girls Hostel.

Preliminary investigations revealed that an electric blanket had been left switched on, leading to overheating that ignited the bedding and mattress inside the room.

Officials said the hostel management acted swiftly by using fire extinguishers, which helped contain the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Fire personnel later extinguished the remaining fire and carried out cooling operations to ensure complete safety.

In the incident, bedding and a mattress in one room were damaged, while the rest of the property was saved. One minor injury was reported; however, no serious harm was caused.

The fire operation was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Mir Aqib Hussain, with effective coordination ensured by Aijaz Ahmad Shah.

Meanwhile, Alok Kumar has advised the public to avoid using substandard electrical appliances and to refrain from leaving electrical devices unattended to prevent such incidents in the future.
